Henry Eugene Davies (July 2, 1836 – September 7, 1894) was an American soldier, writer, and lawyer. He served as a brigadier general of cavalry during the American Civil War.

Biography[]

Davies was born in New York City as the son of Henry E. Davies. He was educated at Harvard, Williams, and Columbia, and was admitted to the bar in 1857.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the United States Volunteers as a captain. After commanding the 2nd New York Cavalry, he became a brigadier general in September 1863. He served with distinction in the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, and became one of Sheridan's most trusted lieutenants. In early 1865, he was given the brevet rank of major general of volunteers.

Following the war, Davies stayed in the army briefly, but resigned in 1866. He subsequently became a prominent New York lawyer and held several public offices. He was the author of General Sheridan (1895), in the "Great Commander Series."
