Sutler wagons were wagons selling provisions, owned and operated by civilians, that followed military troops. These offered supplementary food and other goods to soldiers who had money and were dissatisfied by military provided provisions. They were common during the American Civil War, especially on the Union or Federal side.[1] Prices were frequently doubled or tripled above average, e.g. a dozen eggs could cost $6, which is expensive today but was a fortune back then.
